Snake Oil, Gurus, Experts, Full of Bull Alert

Snake Oil and more

Have you ever noticed how many people claim on their social media sites to be a guru, or an expert of some sort. Bull alert! These people may well be experts of some sort in their industry or market segment but just the fact that they call themselves a guru or an expert smells bad! And how many experts are there really, millions, thousands, hundreds or maybe a handful. I think a handful would really be appropriate.

If you want to be taken seriously, let your work, your references, your blog and your day-to-day interactions speak for themselves. Get rid of all the expert and guru mentions on the dozens of profiles you have out there. Why? It’s an easy way for people to screen you out and not take you seriously. Every time I come across an author or an industry colleague that says they are an expert, I do a double take, usually move on as this type of chatter usually means a total bore anyway.

Get real and let other people talk of you as a guru or expert in your field. Nothing smacks more of truth than ordinary people talking about the real you not the inflated you. Dump the snake oil!
